History

Over 300+ Members across different province in canada

Established in 1993, we are a dynamic organization dedicated to preserving the Yoruba tradition and fostering cultural awareness, educational projects, and recreational activities. Our journey began in Winnipeg, where our headquarters were officially inaugurated on October 3rd, 1993.

In 1998, our Alberta chapter was founded, and on May 19th, 2002, the Edmonton chapter was inaugurated, following the establishment of the Alberta chapter in 1997. Together, these chapters span Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Calgary, comprising twenty-six member families. Our common objective is to create an organization that addresses the imperative need for cultural preservation, language retention, and socioeconomic empowerment within the Yoruba community.

A significant milestone was reached in 1997 when the Okin International Yoruba School received official approval from the Department of Education. Operating within the Winnipeg School Division #1, the school holds Yoruba language classes every Saturday from September to June at Kelvin High School, 155 Kingsway Ave. These classes are also accredited for grades Nine to twelve by the Department of Education, reinforcing their importance in preserving the Yoruba language and culture among the younger generation.

Additionally, we celebrate our anniversary every third weekend in May with an annual conference that brings together the Alberta and Winnipeg chapters. This gathering serves as a testament to our commitment to unity, cultural enrichment, and the preservation of the Yoruba heritage.

In conclusion, the Okin International Cultural Organization of Canada is a beacon of cultural preservation and community engagement. With a rich history dating back to 1993, the club continues to thrive and evolve, embracing the Yoruba tradition and fostering cultural awareness, education, and social cohesion among its members and the broader community.
