English-Yoruba Bilingual Program: A Rich Cultural and Linguistic

Yoruba Language School teaches Yoruba Language to children and adults in Manitoba. Yoruba Language School was established in 1997 and was accredited by the Winnipeg School Division in 2003. Since 2004, Yoruba School has set Yoruba Language examinations for high school students for credits in the Winnipeg School Division.

  • Yoruba School is registered and provides this service yearly during the Special Language Credit Exams in Spring and Fall sessions.
  • Yoruba language classes are held online every Saturday, and an in-person Yoruba Hub class is held one Saturday a month, where students practice speaking and culturally demonstrate what they have learned over the month.
  • The vision is to foster the teaching of the Yoruba language as a tool to ensure the sustainability of Yoruba cultural heritage, language and tradition within Manitoba Mosaic.
  • The program promotes cultural and linguistic diversity and is available to all children of elementary and high school age, regardless of their language background.
  • Yoruba Language School Teachers are certified instructors from Nigeria and Canada. We have three teachers and one coordinator for the school.
  • Yoruba Language School operates three classes: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced.
  • The school calendar runs from September to June. Classes are held every Saturday.
  • The advanced class is for students who use the Yoruba Language Credit to augment their High School Credit.
